The Friends of Ferdinand Festival Street (FFS) have been working with the Seattle Department of Transportation and Convene PLLC (a Columbia City based landscape architecture firm) to develop and refine a plan for the Festival Street. The current concept design and design details can be seen here.

The new plan calls for generous, protected areas of seating on both the north and south sides of Ferdinand Street South. The seating areas will rest on a pedestal support system featuring removable pavers, allowing a smooth transition from the existing sidewalk.

Vehicular traffic will be permitted unless the street is temporarily closed for events. Moveable custom designed partitions will help separate vehicular and pedestrian traffic while still allowing the space to be opened up for events.

Construction is anticipated for Spring of 2024. The overhead canopies shown in some renderings will be built in a future phase.

Maintenance of the space, including trash and recycling pick-up, will be managed by the Friends of Ferdinand Festival Street.

Funding for construction is from several sources. Councilmember Tammy Morales dedicated $120k for the project in the 2022 City Budget, which SDOT will use to fund 3 years of maintenance and a portion of the initial construction. Additional funds for construction are being raised by FFS.
